Picture hanging

Posted in Life on Sat, Sep 30, 2006, 11:33 pm

I only really intended to get the valances in the kitchen hung today, but I actually managed to get some other things done. I had a stack of picture-frame-type objects to hang, and I just sort of got an urge to put all of them in place tonight. So I started with Karne’s picture, since I still needed to attach a hanger to it, and the hanger for the frame arrived in the box with the drapes. The previous owner of the house was pretty savvy with decorating; so the brads she left in the walls were already in optimal places. I was therefore able to hang things in a fairly swift manner. For example, I already had decided that I wanted to hang Karne’s picture over the couch, and behold, there was already a brad in the right spot, as you can see in the photo.

Drapes, part 2

Posted in Life on Sat, Sep 30, 2006, 2:06 pm

This afternoon I put up the curtain rods for the kitchen, and surprisingly they went up without any difficulty. If you saw the old pictures of my bedroom when I first moved in, you may recognize them also. I had to hang new ones in the bedroom, since I needed double rods there—one for the valance and one for the curtains. But the former bedroom rods were just fine for the kitchen. So, now I have the kitchen valances hung. (They also came in the package with the other drapes) I just need to do something with the study now.

Bedroom drapes

Posted in Life on Thu, Sep 28, 2006, 11:27 pm

The drapes that Mom made for my house arrived today; so I can finally occlude the view from my bedroom windows at night. The room certainly looks a bit nicer now, not only because of the lack of towels hanging over the window, but because of the cool style of the window dressing. That just about takes care of the bedroom; I just have a few pictures to hang there and it’ll be done.

The unpacking saga

Posted in Life on Fri, Sep 15, 2006, 12:04 am

Tonight I finally unpacked the last box from the movers; so all I have left now are two of the boxes I came down here with that I still hadn’t fully unpacked yet. Well, three, but I don’t count the third one since it’s all decoration stuff, and I vowed that I wouldn’t decorate until my last box was completely unpacked. It’s looking like I may actually finish unpacking by Saturday, as I planned earlier this week.

I realized also that the reason this is so exhilarating is because it will be the first time in almost six years that I’ll be completely unpacked again. I packed up to move into my parents’ new house when it was finally built, never fully unpacked; then moved most of my stuff to Seattle that Fall and never really had room to put most of it away. In the Summers I’d move some of my stuff back to Minnesota, but most of it remained in Seattle. Then when I graduated I moved everything back to St. Paul again, but didn’t ever get around to unpacking all of it, for various reasons. And finally I moved down here to Phoenix, but didn’t have room to unpack all of my stuff in my apartment. The house finally affords me a proper place to put everything.

Grand piano

Posted in Life on Sat, Sep 9, 2006, 4:37 pm

My piano arrived today, around 2pm. After the piano movers left, I played on it for about two hours at which point I got really hungry and had to stop. But I figured I needed to put up some pictures for everyone that has been waiting to see my piano. (I picked it out last week, but forgot to bring my camera to the store.) Anyway, I’m pretty psyched about finally having a piano to play on. And Mutopia will keep me in free public domain classical sheet music. Huzzah.
